Scholarship Report - 2008

This year scholarships were awarded to ten lucky juniors.

Left to right: Nick Maloney, Sarah Kelly, Francis Cornwall, Claudia Teague, Harriet Teague, Georgia Teague, James Beuvink, Matthew Kirk, Jordan Chilcott and Calvin Kozak.

A weekend of bonding and learning to ski as a group was the plan but Murphy had other ideas! Saturday saw two of our scholars, Harriet and Jordon, take a swim in a very cold and “hidden” river behind the car park. The weather was horrid, so much heavy rain that it created out of season waterfalls up the mountain. Sunday’s weather was fine and allowed our scholars to ski with their families in the morning, then ski and bond as a group with Jane, Roger and me. The afternoon was finished off with a quick cat track race. Matthew Kirk tried to go direct to the finish by going ninety degrees off the track into lumpy crud, needing rescue, and Harriet Teague spectacularly took on a snow bank head-on with a subsequent visit to First Aid!

Monday morning at 8:30 the Scholars were on their way to meet Matthias, from Austria, their instructor for the next five days. The weather remained relatively good until Thursday, which enabled the group to spend a lot of time on their skis and learn many new skills with Mathias.

Each night we arranged activities for everyone at the Club. Trivial pursuits, “balloon shaving’, “who am I”, “rotate around the broom” and other games. Luckily, after some parents tried the broom game, we still had the same number of brooms!

Wednesday night, Luigi, from the Ohakune Fire Service, and the Coulams, visited for dinner.  Thereafter ensued a fire safety quiz and a simulated evacuation of the building complete with thick smoke and all alarms sounding! Great exposure for all involved.

Thursday afternoon, keeping up with tradition, Mathias was invited to the Club for a great night of entertainment.  He selected and presented the “Most Improved Scholar Trophy” to Sarah Kelly, then proceeded to positively critique at length all of the scholars on their skiing achievements. “Scholar of the Year Trophy”, voted by scholars, was won jointly by Harriet Teague and Nick Maloney. To top the night off the scholars performed six amazing skits.

Special thanks to Mathias for being a wonderful instructor and, as a bonus, for providing an excellent lesson on how to repair and wax skis the correct way.  Thanks also to Adrian Farnsworth from Head Skis and Dave Mazey from RAL for sponsorship and support. Also to the parents, scholars and siblings for making Scholarship 2008 a fantastic week.

Regards

Paul, Jane and Roger.
