2008 Ngauruhoe Trophy Results
The Ngauruhoe Trophy is the last of our 2008 team races and the largest inter club ski race in the world. We were graced with magnificent bluebird day.
Despite competition limitations imposed upon us, Rangatira still managed to run 6 of our 9 proposed teams. Due to the restriction on numbers, we were only able to confirm our teams one hour before race start. It was therefore, an enormous feat to have everybody bib’d up and to all have a chance to inspect the course ready for race start. Special mention must be made to Shannon Trafford and Jane Wimsett for their contributions during the bib pick up process, which ran flawlessly.
Again we were setting new records for Club spirit and participation. 29 competitors entered the start gates, making the largest race crew Rangatira has assembled to date. We would have had 45 entrants if allowed.
The No.1 valley race course running down the left hand side of the valley held firm, even after the 200 plus competitors ran through.
We seemed to have amazing luck with the weather; despite threatening flat light from time to time, the forces of ‘good’ overcame those of ‘evil’ as sunshine dominated most of the day.
Everybody fought well, but even with our best efforts we just couldn’t quite manage any new trophies for the wall this time round. Special guest star ‘Simon Wi Rutene’ left us in his dust.
Once again Ngauruhoe Ski Club finished off the day by hosting a tremendous prize giving, followed by George Fm’s DJ, ‘Murray Sweatpants’ busting out the tunes until the wee early hours.
I would like to extend a gigantic Thank You! to everybody who has represented Rangatira throughout the 2008 season. This especially includes our very important part time racers who will race when needed, allowing us to be very flexible when creating teams and to adjust our male/female ratios within the teams to suit the regulations of the particular race. Also a big shout out to all our supporters working behind the scenes and going out of their way in helping our competitors make it to the start line.
Hope all you first time racers, like Alex Tomlin and the entire Jones family, enjoyed it so much you’ll all be back with a vengeance next season for more doses of racing adrenaline.
Official Results for Ngauruhoe cup will be released and posted shortly.
Rangatira 2008 Open Club Champions were determined on a new format this year, using the times from the Ngauruhoe Cup to decide our winners.
Congratulations to Mark Fairley and Shirley Kennett taking out our top spots.
