Bruce Chambers made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit

Rangatira Alpine Sports Club owes its existence to the forward thinking and planning of Bruce Chambers as one of the two people who conceived the club in 1958.

The Rangatira committee wrote the following letter in support of Bruce’s nomination earlier this year:

Bruce maintains an active role in the club as well as involvement in other sporting organisations such as TriNZ (Triathlon New Zealand in which Bruce is an internationally recognised official), Ironman New Zealand and the Whitianga BMX and mountain bike park (which should also be named after him).

Involvement in mountain activities did not stop with Rangatira. As well as serving on the committee until 1967, he was secretary of the Auckland Association of Mountain Clubs, later secretary of Ruapehu Mountain Clubs Association (RMCA) and contributed eight years in Ruapehu Ski Patrol.

Bruce Chambers and Don Yallop were the driving force behind the foundation of the club, and also for the financial and physical effort to begin construction of the club’s facilities on Mount Ruapehu which were opened in 1960. Bruce was made a life member of the club in 1970, an honour bestowed on very few members for exceptional service to the club.

Rangatira Alpine Sports Club is proud to see Bruce’s achievements recognised in this way; made all the more special in the club’s 50th year.
