After winning a number of snowboard racing prizes over the last few years, Rangatira Alpine Sports Club decided it was time to acknowledge the future potential our young snowboarders have and hold a snowboard scholarship this year.
So on the first weekend of October 2010 a group of riders arrived at Rangatira Ohakune for the club’s first ever snowboard scholarship. The seven boarders chosen to represent the club were James Beuvink, Geordie Holibar, Michael Bryant, Molly McDonald, Simon Millar, Grace Addington-Hall and Edward Martin. The manager of the event was Mike Beuvink (a skier).

All junior and youth members aged 12 to 16 are eligible to attend club scholarship. The only requirement is that each scholar is accompanied at the mountain by at least one parent or guardian.

Nine Scholars were selected this year to attend our annual programme during the July school holidays at Whakapapa. All scholars and their families were in house on Friday night; Saturday morning greeted us with weather suitable for skiing, good snow cover and a group of scholars ever so keen to hit the slopes.
The Saturday afternoon session (with Roger, Paul and Penny), designed to get our scholars skiing as a formal group, was going well until a snow boarder cleaned out Erin on the “Nose Dive”. The sled ride to first-aid to see if her arm was fractured wasn’t part of our plan! Luckily, arm not broken, the determined Erin was able to rejoin the group for skiing on Tuesday.

All junior and youth members aged 12 to 16 are eligible to attend Club Scholarship. The only requirement is that each Scholar is accompanied at the mountain by at least one parent or guardian.
Scholarship involves the second week in the July school holidays. Saturday & Sunday are a compulsory ‘team bonding’ weekend followed by five days of the holiday week which are spent with an RAL ski instructor. You must be able to attend all seven days; Friday 10th July through to Friday 17th of July at Iwikau.
The Club pays for the ski instructor from Monday through to Friday and all Scholars receive free accommodation for the nights of Sunday through to Thursday. You are responsible for you own lift pass and ski gear, and helmets are compulsory.

The Scholars for 2008 where announced at the pre-Season function at the Snow Centre in Newmarket on Tuesday night, 10th June.
They are Harriet Teague, Nick Malone, Sarah Kelly, Georgia Teague, Frances Cornwall, James Beauvink, Matthew Kirk, Calvin Kozak, Claudia Teague and Jordan Chilcott.
Applications for next season should be to the Club Captain by the end of May 2009.

Applications for 2008 Scholarship has closed and the successful juniors taking part this year will be announced at the Pre Season function on 10th June. Thanks to sponsors like Adrian Farnsworth of Head Skis, committee members, senior past scholarship winners and a few volunteers, our Scholarship Programme has successfully evolved over the years into the event we support today.

Report from Helen and Karin at Iwikau lodge.
We’re almost at the end of a great but wet Scholarship week. The kids have had a great time and have done some fantastic bonding. Unfortunately, the weather has not been kind to us, with only two half days where the Waterfall Express managed to open (in total fog).

The 2005 Scholars are, in no particular order, Cayleigh du Plessis, Melissa Lockey, Shannon Martin, Rachel Clarke, Kate Chilcott, Matthew Lester, Nathan Lockey, Cameron Deynzer, Jacob Anderson, Nicholas Boberg.
Although I have been a parent of a scholar, I was a ‘novice’ running Scholarship on behalf of Trish and the Committee.
