Introduction

The season is so close I can almost touch it. In fact the South Island season is underway at some fields and the learners slopes at Ruapehu are open. My colleagues at work are complaining about cold weather, a complaint I can never understand as cold weather brings us the white stuff we crave so much. So everything is ready and the signs are good for a great season so I look forward to seeing you all down at the mountain soon.

The Club's preseason social was a great success with about 120 people turning up to enjoy good company, information on the latest equipment and prizes for a lucky few.

In this issue we highlight the racing opportunities this season including the subsidised senior race training weekend (I was going to say 'adult training weekend' but it didn't sound quite right). We announce the winners of 2006 Scholarships and see who won a pair of shiny new Head skis at the preseason social.

Senior Race Training Weekend

This year Rangatira will be running another Race Training Weekend on the 22nd and 23rd of July 2006. We ran this for the first time last year and overall it proved to be successful and extremely enjoyable.

This weekend is not just aimed and people who have raced previously. But is aimed at increasing interest and participation in club races.

For all those interested, please contact me and book as soon as possible, as positions are limited

A few more details..

This year the format will be slightly different to last year. The major change being, that this year we will be splitting into two groups. This is due to increased interest among club members. Each group will receive a day training session on both days (weather permitting). Morning sessions run from 10am and afternoon sessions start at 1.30pm, all sessions will run for about 2.5hrs.

As it stands the plan is to have Saturday as GS training with gates and Sunday Slalom training with gates. All sessions will be run by a Turoa Ski School Instructor, who will provide expert instruction on racing and general technique (with the added bonus of avoiding those weekend queues).

To allow me to keep track of numbers, please contact me prior to booking to confirm places are still available. Also when booking your accommodation, please remember to write on your booking form that you will be attending the training weekend, and add $30 per person to cover costs of the race coach .

Should the training be cancelled due to weather and cannot take place both days. The cost of the training will be reimbursed to your Rangatira account.

Please note:

  • That confirmation of bookings and payment through Linda will confirm your attendance

  • Numbers are limited so book promptly

  • The training weekend is aimed at senior club members

Any questions please email Anton or call 021 779 799.

Cheers Anton Haueter

Preseason Social

As noted in the introduction, about 120 members and friends turned out for the 2006 preseason social (what used to be called the Wine and Cheese Evening). As well as catching up with friends we were treated to information on the latest equipment by Snow Centre staff. The Snow Centre also donated several great door prizes.

Adrian Farnsworth, importer of Head sporting equipment and honorary Club member, kindly donated a pair of Head skis and bindings as a door prize for the pre-season social. The lucky winner was Jackie Groothuis who was clearly very happy with her win.
