Introduction
The ski season has been going pretty well
although I personally haven't had much luck with the weather.
August 12th was pretty exciting as the Club achieved its
debut first place in the Haensli Cup by winning the snowboarding
section.
Dive Fish and Snow (travel specialists)
are having a competition to build up their marketing database.
In return for accepting a few emails from them you can
win a ski trip to Whistler. They generally have pretty
good travel deals so it should be worth entering even if
you don't win.
Many of you will have received emails from
Trish Oosterbaan, Club Captain, regarding various events
at Mt Ruapehu. One member suggested to me that Trish must
be working for RAL; rest assured, Trish is promoting these
events to benefit the Club by encouraging members
to make more bookings, especially mid-week bookings.
By
the way, have you noticed that mid-week bookings, excluding
school holidays, are cheaper than weekend bookings? It's
only $17.50 a night for Adult members. If you can ski midweek,
not only are the slopes less crowded but you save money
as well!
Finally, I note that RAL have put Life
Passes on sale again until September 10th. If you missed
out last time, or are just feeling richer now, I highly
recommend one. If you purchased a 2006 Season Pass the
price will be credited to the cost of the Life Pass. Click here for
more information.
That's all for now. Happy trails.

Haensli Cup
|
One glorious Saturday, it was August 12th, 2006,
Rangatira put forth its premier
snowboarders into the competitive
cauldron that is the Haensli
Cup and took away the spoils
of war. Actually, it wasn't
a great day at all weather
wise but the snowboarding team did
achieve Rangatira's first ever
first place in the Haensli
Cup. Rangatira also fielded
junior and masters teams and
managed fourth in the senior
(open) event which was a good
result achieved in no small
part thanks to Jordan Wimsett
and her Whakapapa race team
partner Gabrielle Free.
The snowboarding team consisted of Rachel Gibson,
Lance Elrick and Luke Elrick
who deserved their win and
were justifiably elated. A
special mention also goes to
Phil Clemow for persuading
the RSC Club Captain to award
the trophy to the team with
the fastest three times as
no team had more than three
finishers. |

Christiania Derby
Our five year winning streak in the Masters category
had to end sooner or later and unfortunately it was this
year as our team came third.
Nevertheless, five winning years in a row is an amazing
achievement and the winning club pulled in experts from
as far away as France in order to finally top us; so we
shouldn't be too upset.
Rangatira also entered Mens and Womens open teams.

Club Members Getting Great Race Results
Jordan Wimsett,
aged 17, won third place in slalom and giant slalom in the J2 age group
at the J&K Cup at Turoa on August 5th. A large number of racers competed
in the event which shows what a great result this is for Jordan.
Monique Oosterbaan has been achieving great results in
the South Island coming ninth in a high quality field in both Slalom
and Giant Slalom at Treble Cone.
Maria Oosterbaan came second in the Pro Women's Slopestyle Skiing at
Turoa on July 29/30. |

One Flush Too Many
Roger Wimsett had the misfortune to be in
the men's bathroom when one of the toilets decided that
it had had enough of being attached to the wall and made
a short trip to the floor. Luckily Roger thought quickly
and called out to Vincent in the next stall to not flush
until the open pipe in the wall was blocked up (owing to
the long standing back-flow problem).
Rob (Iwikau custodian) and Roger spent the
rest of the day restoring the throne to its proper position;
hopefully for a very long reign. Top

Picture of the Week

Phil Clemow stands behind Rob Yallop's car after
a bit of a cold snap
(August 13th, 2006).
The hard part was scraping
2cm of ice off the
windscreen. Thank goodness for
all-wheel drive; no
chains were required. |
