From the President

Winter is almost upon us, with a dusting of the white stuff on the mountain and much more forecast to come. Bookings are coming in thick and fast, with a number of weekends and some weeks (including school holidays) almost full, so don’t delay getting your preferred dates booked.

If you haven’t tried the new online booking system yet, give it a go – this will ensure you are “connected” and receive the club’s email newsletters and correspondence. Feedback to it has been very positive. Just a reminder, that if your account is in credit and there are bunks available, your booking will be confirmed immediately.

If you haven’t paid your subs yet, you have until the end of the month before a 10% penalty will be loaded to your account. If payment is problem, please contact Jenny or Jane to make an arrangement.

Membership is now open for a limited time to both full and midweek members. So, if you have friends, work mates or relatives thinking of joining, now is a good time to apply.

The Turoa works are nearing completion and are set to provide us with one of the best facilities in Ohakune. This lodge is a must visit this season, with our resident chef/custodian on board from the 18th of June.

2011 Custodians

Again this year we have appointed a couple to the position of custodians at Turoa; Steve Tann & Jo start on 18 June. Both have a background in hospitality and Steve is an Executive Chef so we took the opportunity for the 2011 season to trial having a chef prepare the evening meal (note, this doesn’t mean you can’t offer to assist). Members will still be responsible for breakfast. We are sure some fabulous meals will be provided and we look forward to your feedback on this trial.

Tom Green will be taking over at Iwikau on 24 June. Tom has worked for P&O for the past 5 years and has been in charge of activities. Tom isn’t a chef so the Iwikau lodge dinner service lodge will operate as normal.

Work Parties

Work has been underway at Turoa over the summer by a great team of club members and a number of changes have been made to the lodge. Before we open for the season we need volunteers to give the place a thorough clean. The date for this is 10/11 June; please email r.a.s.c@xtra.co.nz to volunteer your services.

Iwikau is due to open on first weekend in July and the lodge needs to be spring cleaned and stocked with food. This is also a great time to take your gear down before the season starts. The date for this is 24/25 June; please email r.a.s.c@xtra.co.nz to volunteer your services.

New Format for Junior Club Champs

This year Brent & Tracey Worthington have committed to organising and running the club’s Junior Ski Racing Championships and they need your support. Their goal is to make this one of the best events ever and this can only occur with your help.

No doubt a number of you will remember the Mapei Junior Races of recent years and some of you will have taken part in this event. Tracey and Brent were responsible for the establishment and management of this race which quickly became the biggest and most successful event ever held for junior skiers in New Zealand. They are committed to creating a mini version just for our junior members.

The criteria for entry into the races are unchanged, but Brent & Tracey are seeking the support of sponsors to dramatically increase the prize pool.

It is with great pleasure that we can confirm the first sponsors are New Zealand Natural Ice Cream and Rangatira Alpine Sports Club Inc.

New Zealand Natural Ice Cream will be providing their fine product to be consumed at the prize giving function.

Rangatira is donating six vouchers for two nights accommodation for a junior member or their junior guest, redeemable during the 2012 season. These will be drawn as spot prizes at the prize giving function.

The prize giving function will occur on the evening of the race in the lodge at Turoa. All medals and trophies will be presented to the junior placegetters and winners at this time.

Mums, Dads and fellow senior members: are you a sponsor?

If you or someone you know is in a position to sponsor this event we welcome the opportunity to discuss this further. We seek products or monetary donations and in return can offer advertising exposure in our club newsletter, on-snow advertising on race day and a sponsors board displayed in the Turoa lodge during the week of the race and at the prize giving function.

The types of things we seek sponsorship for include: discount vouchers, snow skiing products, beverages, ski clothing, confectionary, lift passes, MacDonalds, Burger King and KFC vouchers, Snowplanet vouchers, caps, t-shirts, CD/DVD vouchers, Rotorua Luge vouchers, anything that will be appropriate and appeal to children or teenagers.

So please put your thinking caps on and help if you can. If you have a contact, but don’t wish to make the approach, send us the details and we’ll gladly take care of it.

In the mean time Tracey and Brent will also be talking to companies and people we know to secure additional sponsors.

Updates will follow soon.
